Mediterranean mussels

    • Common name: Mediterranean mussels
    • Latin name: Mytilus galloprovincialis
    • FAO code: MSM

Mediterranean mussels contain proteins, antioxidants and vitamins B and C. They contain mineral salts such as phosphorus, potassium and sodium, which allow the typical stimulating and digestive properties of the mussels, the shellfish family to which they belong. Our Mediterranean mussels are rich in iron, magnesium and zinc, essential to support nerve and muscle activities and bone growth.

The Mediterranean mussel is a bivalve mollusc characterized by a long oval-shaped shell, generally black, while the highly appreciated meat is white and orange.

The breeding of these molluscs is becoming increasingly widespread, especially in the Upper Adriatic regions, in semi-submerged plants called "long-line".

Thanks to the production of "bisso", a textile fibre produced by the mollusc itself, consisting of keratin and able to solidify as soon as it comes into contact with water, the Mediterranean mussels can be anchored to each other, thus creating large agglomerates.

They can reach 110 mm in length, especially appreciated for their full and tasty flavour.

Home grown Mediterranean mussels are processed in spring and in summer, coming mainly from areas of Emilia Romagna, Veneto, Marche and Friuli.

In the fall/winter period, Spanish mussels are processed, mostly from the Galician inlets.

Italian Mediterranean mussels are one of our leading products, also thanks to the vacuum packaging in trays with protective film, which allows the mussel to keep its freshness and all nutritional properties, bringing to your dishes the true taste of the Mediterranean Sea.
